Aug/Sep 2005 - Setting Districts

There seems to be an increasing practice in drivers permanently setting their districts for the airport under the misconception that it will increase their earnings. Occasionally, that may well happen but it is more likely to result in reducing your take by up to 30%.

Bookings made on the IVR are increasing all the time with customers going to the airport are using this facility. As the destination is not given, these jobs are not offered to cars with districts set. Airport bookings have one of the highest priorities therefore it is likely that the airport booking would be received irrespective of districts being set. Consider the following recent scenario which happened in an outer northern suburb. The early morning bookings had indicated a prospect between 5am and 6am. Car A, with airport district set, was first car in the area and Car B second, with no district restrictions. Between 4.45am and 5.30am, car B completed 3 local radio jobs not offered to Car A and a fourth job allocated in an adjoining area on GPS. The passenger was at a railway station and hailed before Car B arrived. The resultant no job gave Car B priority and he scored the prospect. As a result, by 6.00am, Car A was still to start his meter and Car B was well on the way to his first $100 for the day. Who is the smarter driver?

There are times when setting a district can be advantageous. Obviously changeover is one but it can also be used for a groups’ car or if you have an appointment or other personal commitment. Here is another piece of smart thinking that a driver used recently. While sitting at Graceville on a Saturday late afternoon the driver booked into Indooroopilly and was 4th car. Three jobs popped up on cover in Camira, Goodna and Moggill, all a good 15 minute run away. The driver quickly set his districts for the airport and which gave him the Goodna job which he successfully applied for. He advised the query operator of his ETA and the customer was advised accordingly. The driver arrived to a good reception, happy customers and a $39 fare.
