TAXI SUBSIDY SCHEME

Queensland Transport recently advised that the legislative deadline for the integration of card readers with taximeters was 1 May 2008. However, operators were given an extension to 1 March 2009 to ensure this requirement is met in all metered taxis.

Section 96AG of the Transport Operation (Passenger Transport) Regulation 2005, "Ensuring approved card reader interfaces with the taximeter and is kept connected" came into force 1 May 2008. This section together with Section 158A not only requires that all metered taxis be fitted with an approved card reader but also that the interface with the taximeter is maintained at all times while the taxi is in use. The maximum penalty for non-compliance is 20 penalty units (or $2000).

From 1 March 2009 all claims for payment under the Taxi Subsidy Scheme originating from non-integrated card readers will not be paid. The lack of integration between card readers and taximeters is not a valid reason to use Restricted Use Slips (RUS). Additionally, Penalty Infringement Notices may be issued for non-compliance from that date.

Queensland Transport also reminds drivers of the mandatory requirement to make a visual comparison of passengers with Taxi Subsidy Scheme smartcard photographs to ensure the passenger using the smartcard is the legitimate holder and member of the scheme.

Drivers are further reminded that to operate correctly, the smartcard must be inserted in the card reader and not swiped as with EFTPOS cards.
